Interesting Read!

  1. Hi Crystal, I recently came across your blog and immediately bought the vitamins and minerals that you suggest. I started having trouble with my thyroid in early 2011 but wasn't diagnose with hypothyroidism until January 2012. At that time I got on Synthroid. That wasn't effective for me so my doctor put me on Armour, which worked until October. Suddenly I started feeling hypo/hyper again and gained all the weight back that I had lost. I was switching from crying and immobile all day long, to waking up with palpitations and panic attacks at night. This was affecting my job, and my ability to function in general, so I stopped taking my meds when my doctor suggested I just needed to see a psychologist. I stopped taking my meds in December for the same reason, but restarted them in January when I was gaining weight again and my skin was breaking out. Off the meds in January my levels were: TSH 4.9, FT4 .72, TPO 41, and IgA 205. On the 60 mg of Armour my TSH was 1.76 right before I stopped taking them. I started selenium, Vitamin E, etc Sunday. I feel imminently better cognitively; I can stay awake all day, I can clean my apartment, I can get things done when I think of them rather than procrastinating, and I have more energy. I'm not crying in front of the TV all day and night. However, I feel like I'm getting bigger and bigger with each passing day. It's only a matter of time before my last pair of scrub pants fit me. I know it's been less than a week, but I'm so worried about not being on some sort of medication. Do you have any suggestions? I also bought a fluoride water filter and I'm gluten and dairy free. Trying to stay on the autoimmune protocol but I haven't bought any meat, so my diet has been primarily sweet potatoes and broccoli recently. Oh, did you experience an outrageous appetite with your hypo symptoms? Most days I feel like I could eat and never be full.Ever. 1000 calories in a sitting is no problem for me, which is why I try to limit myself to vegetables to get that full feeling on fewer calories. Thanks so much for your blog. It's given me hope. I am praying that it works for me. I want my body and my life back.

    1. Kerry Anne - I was diagnosed in September 2012 with Hashimoto's Disease. I immediately went gluten free and did a 30 day autoimmune diet. I also started taking Selenium, Magnesium, Folate, Emulsified Vit D3, Fish Oil, Liquid B-Complex, and a MulitVit that did not contain Iodine (also stopped using iodized salt). You have to make sure none of your supplements contain gluten or wheat. I immediately felt so much better and began losing weight. I still had a few issues and also stumbled upon this blog about a week ago and after reading the entire blog have added copper, zinc and Vit E. I take the Selenium and Vit E in the afternoon, the mulit Vit, B-Complex, Emulsified D3 and Fish Oil in the am and all others in the evening. It has only been a week but I am seeing some slight improvements. The same things don't work for everyone, you have to keep researching until you find the balance of things that work for you. Another helpful site is Hashimoto's 411 on Facebook. They have some really great moderators and people who have the same issues and provide some great support and advice.

I too found this blog so hopeful that I also may be able to overcome this disease and get my life back. My hashimoto's was triggered by my pregnancy and it was a very difficult first couple of years before I finally was diagnosed - not that the physicians did anything for me. They did not put me on meds and indicated they would do so only once my thyroid was destroyed. That did not sit too well with me and I began researching like crazy until I got some answers as to what I could do to preserve my thyroid. I wish you all the best.

  2. trying to reply for the third time...

research candida - you might have candida overgrowth if you constantly crave carbs and sugar.

need to clean your gut - most autoimmne diseases originate in the gut and this is the first place to treat

  3. HI, well firstly what a great blog! I feel like I have been a fulltime researcher of late and this has been the best personal account I have found.

I have Hashi's, I started paleo at the end of Feb. This resulted in clearing my gut candida without knowing what I was doing, as soon as I discovered this was happening I got myself a vegan probiotic.

Then I found your blog and started 2 weeks ago with the selenium vit E and zinc copper complex.

I almost immediately started to feel clearer.. The thyroid swelling has totally gone and since end of Feb have ditched most of the extra pounds. I am going for bloods in 2 weeks to see what TPO says, fingers crossed for a dramatic drop, as they were elevated to 848.. would love to have halved that, fingers crossed.

Thanks for the great blog work :)

  4. Hi Crystal,

Hope this message finds you well. I wanted to send you a personal email but there does not appear to be a way to contact you through this blog other than through leaving a message, so please feel free to delete this as I do not want to be "spamming" your blog.

I really want to thank you for sharing your story with going dairy free and reversing your Hashimoto's…Yours was the first blog I found that inspired me to change my diet in 2011. I left you a comment and I really appreciate your feedback to take a look at my adrenals☺ Since that time I have been a journey to find my own root cause.

My name is Izabella Wentz and I am a pharmacist who was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 2009. Over the last three years, I have been researching and testing complementary therapies for Hashimoto’s.

I have been able to identify the root cause of my Hashimoto’s, and have also been able to put my condition into remission. Lifestyle interventions like diet, supplements and stress reduction have made a huge difference in my life.

I have compiled emerging research with my findings into a patient guide, a 350+ page book called: Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause. I introduce an approach called DIG AT IT that people can use to discover their own triggers, as well as provide an approach to healing.

My hope is to spread awareness about lifestyle interventions for Hashimoto’s and I really think that my book and blog can help others along in their journey.

I’d love to send you a copy of the book. If you find the book helpful or think it could help others, would you be interested in collaborating on spreading awareness?

    I really appreciate your consideration!

    Kind Regards,

    Izabella Wentz, PharmD, FASCP

  5. Hi Crystal,
I'm not sure if you are still checking/replying to this blog, but I just now came across it. I'm currently 27 years old and was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in April of 2012. I live in Southern Orange County (CA) and I've been taking Naturethroid ever since my diagnosis. Up until now, have felt pretty hopeless (since I've read everywhere else that there wan't a cure). I'm still tired all the time and struggling to maintain my weight. I've been trying to eat Gluten Free and Vegan since August, but have still felt sick. I am looking forward to trying other supplements (Selenium, Vitamin E, Zinc & Copper) and hopefully not have to take a thyroid hormone for the rest of my life. I am getting my bloodwork done next week and will see the results the following week. I just wanted to know if you still get your bloodwork checked every 6 months to a year, and whether or not you see an endocrinologist or just a regular doctor?? I've been going to the Center For New Medicine, but may possible see a specialist at the end of August... however, after reading your blog, I feel like seeing a specialist won't help if he will just want to put me on Synthroid... My husband and I have also talked about having kids soon, so it would be nice to not struggle with this during/after pregnancy. Hope to hear from you soon!
